Pewsheet 12th June 2016

Welcome

After the Royal Variety Performance one year, the Queen is introduced to the stars of the show, including Tommy Cooper who asks her if she minds answering a personal question.

‘No,’ she says, ‘But I might not be able to give you a full answer.’

‘Do you like football?’ asks Cooper.

‘Well, not really,’ the Queen replies.

‘In that, case do you mind if I have your Cup Final tickets?’

It seems very evident that the Queen has learnt how to take all the jokes and awkward moments in her stride. There are many stories of how her grace and consideration has won people over.  Today we join in asking God to bless our Queen for her faithfulness and hear a challenge in our Gospel reading of how Jesus deals with a particularly awkward moment at a dinner party he attends.

Collect for The Queen

Heavenly Father,

as we celebrate the ninetieth birthday of Her Majesty the Queen,

receive our heartfelt thanks

for all that you have given her in these ninety years

and for all that she has given to her people.

Continue, we pray, your loving purposes in her,

and as you gather us together in celebration,

unite us also in love and service to one another;

through Jesus Christ our Lord.

The PCC

The PCC met on 16 May 2016. Subject to the    approval of the minutes the PCC discussed and agreed the following.

Being on the PCC

ND spoke about the role of the PCC members and welcomed the PCC to express their thoughts, which would allow us to make a corporate decision. We reviewed the teams which are Minster Rooms, Hospitality, Fabric, World Community and Communication.  New PCC members were welcomed and previous members of the PCC/teams were thanked.

Review of stored items in Gallery

The Gallery has several items that have been stored there for a long time. These are the former Wadham alter table, a prayer kneeler, small copper lectern, eagle lectern, plain lectern and alter rail.  The PCC members went into the church and reviewed them in Gallery.  Following the review, they agreed that ND should ask the Archdeacon what the next appropriate step should be with a review to remove them.

Finance Report

The first quarter has ended with both Income and Expenditure below budget and with an overall surplus of £13,009 (budgeted for surplus of £10,983), as the deficit in Expenditure is greater than the deficit in Income at this point in time.

Review 2016 Regulations for Chalice and  Paten Assistants

Currently the Bishop authorises Chalice and Paten Assistants every 3 years and the General Synod has simplified the procedure.  PCC’s can decide to stay with this process or can decide that they wish to devolve this responsibility to the Vicar and PCC.  At the same time the General Synod were aware of churches that involve children and may wish to think about children being involved.  The PCC agreed that they want to devolve responsibly to ND and noted that this may include children where appropriate.

Vicar’s Update

ND confirmed that Deborah will start on 3 July 2016 and there will be a service at Whitelackington at 6pm. Patricia
