Pewsheet 19th June 2016

This coming week will see the referendum vote on continuing EU membership. All of those eligible can exercise their freedom to vote as they wish but Christians are less free than non-Christians. Paul proclaims that we are free, but free ‘in Christ’.  With our freedom comes the obligation to exercise our freedom in obedience to the truth we find in the one we call Lord and Master. That truth is witnessed in the New Testament and in the worship of the Church through the ages.  Therefore this morning we seek a relevant truth in Paul’s words to the Galatians and Luke’s telling of the story of the man inhabited by a legion of unclean spirits. In the light of what we find, then we can vote.

O God, the protector of all who trust in you,

without whom nothing is strong, nothing is holy:

increase and multiply upon us your mercy;

that with you as our ruler and guide

we may so pass through things temporal

that we lose not our hold on things eternal;

grant this, heavenly Father,

for our Lord Jesus Christ’s sake,

who is alive and reigns with you,

in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

one God, now and for ever.

Psalm 22. 19-28

Galatians 3.23 – end

Luke 8.26 – 39
